What is a Biomass Boiler?

A biomass boiler burns organic fuels like wood pellets, chips, or logs to provide heat and hot water. Working much like conventional boilers, they’re carbon-neutral since the CO₂ released is balanced by what the fuel absorbed during growth.

Ideal for central heating or process heat, biomass systems efficiently serve homes, farms, estates, district networks, or businesses, often with on-site fuel storage for supply and cost control.

Key Benefits of Biomass Heating

ESP Staff Picture
  • Carbon-Neutral Heat
Offset fossil fuels and reduce CO₂ emissions dramatically, ideal for achieving net zero targets.
  • Fuel Flexibility
Compatible with wood chips, pellets, or logs depending on system size and application.
  • RHI Legacy & Future-Ready
Boilers installed under the RHI scheme continue to receive payments. New systems may qualify for future sustainability schemes.
  • Cost-Effective in the Long Run
Biomass fuel is more stable in price than oil or LPG, providing excellent long-term return.
  • Ideal for Off-Grid Properties
Perfect for rural locations without mains gas reliable, scalable heating from your own supply.
  • Works with District Heating
Heat multiple buildings from one central boiler using insulated pipe networks.

Solutions proven to work

We used ESP from recommendation following a couple of failed attempts to get others to quote, one call to Ross at ESP and the ball was rolling. Ross attended site on multiple occasions to asses the site, and offer comprehensive guidance on the best system to use on our site. His staff are all more friendly and helpful, there was a wait on commissioning of the system, and whilst a little frustrating as we were excited to get up and running the time was useful as it allowed us to sort out what we were going to do with our electric meter, is the one we had is unable to measure units to export. ESP also offer A lot of help and advise on sorting this to, we look forward to the saving on return of investment, and would not think twice to use ESP again for any similar projects.

The team were fantastic, From quoting through to order, install & commissioning, they were super responsive, incredibly competent, and nothing was too much trouble.

They put up 22 solar panels, a Tesla Powerwall 3 battery, connected two energy supplies into 1, dug trenches between buildings, installed a Cat6 ethernet cabling system AND kept cost reasonable with no shocks. Above all, they were nice guys! I cannot recommend this company strongly enough.

Superb local company who service our Austrian biomass boiler with expertise and resourcefulness. I’ve been happy to recommend to my friends who also have biomass boilers. I’m very grateful to the ESP team and their knowledge and responsiveness.

FAQS

Yes, when sourced sustainably, biomass fuel is considered carbon-neutral as the CO₂ released during combustion is offset by the fuel’s lifecycle.

They do require regular cleaning and annual servicing, but modern systems are highly automated and low effort for daily operation.

We can recommend a system based on the most suitable fuel for your site, wood pellets, chips, or logs.

Not usually for domestic installs, but larger commercial or silo-fed systems may require local planning consultation.

Yes, biomass is ideal for district heating, where heat is piped to several buildings from one central plant room.

Depending on your current setup, switching to biomass CHP can reduce CO₂ emissions by 60–90%, especially if replacing oil, LPG, or grid electricity.

Yes, when fuel is sustainably sourced, biomass is considered a carbon-neutral energy source, as the CO₂ emitted is offset by the carbon absorbed during growth.
